Agriculture Program Coordinator

Status: Full-time (35-40 hours per week)

Reports To: Agriculture Programs Director (PD)

Anticipated Start Date: November 21st, 2022

Program Description: SyRAP is a training program and incubator farm for former refugees who are interested in accessing farmland to grow their own food and/or to generate income from selling their produce. SyRAP farmers have previously worked on incubator plots on partner farmland and will now be transitioning to RISE’s newly acquired 180-acre farm in Lacona, NY for the 2023 growing season and beyond. In partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), farmers receive relevant training each year in agriculture, marketing, and business topics before they move towards a more hands-off model where the farmers operate with less support from the program and take on certain financial costs of farming. Farmers currently have the option of selling at the CNY Regional Market, through the new Harvest Share program, or directly to their communities. SyRAP also consists of a series of community gardens on the Northside of Syracuse and a goat farm apprenticeship program operated out of Tully, NY. The Agriculture Program Coordinator will be an employee of Refugee and Immigrant Self-Empowerment (RISE). RISE advocates and promotes self sufficiency through employment, education, social support, and economic independence for members of the refugee and immigrant communities in Onondaga, Erie and Oswego counties, NY.

Position Description: In collaboration with program partners and other RISE Agriculture staff, the Agriculture Program Coordinator will oversee all incubator farm programming within the Syracuse Refugee Agricultural Program while assisting the Program Director with program development, outreach/communications, grant writing, and other duties as needed. The position is part office work (~60%) and part direct field support (~40%) during the growing season. In the off season it is mostly office work with some indoor programming and planning with farmers. This is an incredible opportunity to join a hardworking, mission-driven organization at a pivotal time as the existing Agriculture program is to be transferred onto new land and expanded in the coming years to achieve long term self-sufficiency. The successful candidate should have very strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to work independently, organize competing priorities, be flexible and open minded. The Program Coordinator will be required to work with a wide variety of individuals and organizations, including farmers and staff from multiple countries, program partners, and other neighbors or community stakeholders surrounding RISE’s new farm in Lacona, NY. The successful candidate must have a sincere interest in sustainable food/agriculture systems, food justice, working with different cultures, decreasing food insecurity, and increasing self-sufficiency.
