Agriculture Programs Director


Status: Full-time (35-40 hours a week)/Compensation Based on Experience
Reports To: Director of Programs


Program Description: In partnership with program partners, the Agriculture Program Director will provide programmatic support and connect incubator farmers to resources through the Syracuse Refugee Agricultural Program (SyRAP). SyRAP is a training program and incubator farm for refugees who are interested in starting their own farming business and/or acquiring farmland. Farmers have
previously worked on incubator plots on partner farmland and will now be transitioning to a new 180-acre farm that RISE is acquiring. Farmers attend classes each year in ESOL, agriculture, gardening, marketing, and business training before they move towards a more hands-off model where the farmers operate with less support and lease land from the program. This individual will be an employee of Refugee and Immigrant Self-Empowerment (RISE). RISE advocates and promotes self-sufficiency through employment, education, social support, and economic independence for members of the refugee and immigrant communities in Onondaga County, NY. It is anticipated that this position will start on August 29th, 2022. 

Position Description: This is an incredible opportunity to join a hardworking, mission-driven organization at a pivotal time as the organization transfers the existing programs and broadens them on new land which will make the program very sustainable in the long term. The successful candidate should have very strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to work independently, prioritize
tasks, be flexible and open minded. The Program Director will be required to work with a wide variety of individuals and organizations, including farmers from multiple countries, other nearby farms, and partners. The successful candidate must have a sincere interest in food justice, working with different cultures, decreasing food insecurity, and increasing self-sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities
● Grant writing, management, and reporting
● Support planning and coordination of SyRAP activities
● Supervise all other SyRAP employees including approving timesheets, vacation and purchase
requests and conducting one on one meetings
● Ensure implementation of all grant policies and procedures
● Manage communications with farmers and interpreters
● Help build positive relationships with partners and external parties
● Manage the workforce development meat goat farm

● Keep track of interpreter hours
● Support growth and program development
● Some evening and weekend hours may be required depending on farmers’ schedules
● Organize and recruit volunteers and potential participants
● Other duties as assigned by the RISE Executive Director

Education and Experience
Qualifications:
● 1-2 years of experience in supervision or management
● Self-directed individual with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as
well as collaborate with others in a team setting
● Outstanding leadership ability and communication skills
● Ability to be flexible, solve problems as needed, and manage competing priorities
● Experience with communicating with a diverse group of individuals
● Deep passion and commitment to connecting both marginalized and privileged communities
to sustainable agriculture
● Ability to drive and have a clean driving record
● Ability to lift 50 lbs


Preferred Qualifications:
● Fluency in another language
● Experience working with refugees and immigrants or working internationally
● Experience with and passion for community and personal development


Education and Licenses:
● Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience
● Driver’s License
